What is Chelation Therapy and What Can it Do for Me?

Heavy metals are everywhere in our environment and have been linked to diseases of virtually every part of our body. From neurodegenerative disorders like Alzheimers and Parkinsons to cardiovascular diseased like heart attack and stroke. These toxins can damage every organ and tissue in the body. Chelation therapy is the intra-venous administration of a compound that binds with heavy metals so the body can eliminate them. Chelation means “to grab” or “to bind” and is only effective if given via intra-venous administration. It is not effective orally.

The most common compound used is EDTA. By keeping the levels of heavy metals in the body as low as possible, we help to delay and eliminate the damage caused by them.
“Because EDTA is so effective at removing unwanted minerals and metals from the blood, it has been the standard ‘FDA-approved’ treatment for lead, mercury, aluminum and cadmium poisoning for more than 50 years.”

Why would I have heavy metals in my body?

Our environment is full of heavy metals and other toxins. They are in our food, water, and even in the air we breathe. Heavy metals are toxic to almost every tissue in our body. They especially damage nerves, blood vessels, blood cells, and our thyroid. We have established “toxic levels” that cause immediate life threatening damage. We have not established safe levels at which no harm is caused. Studies are finding that low levels that have been felt to be safe in the past can cause significant damage gradually over time. How much mercury or lead are you comfortable having in your body? In addition to removing heavy metals, there has been evidence that EDTA treatments may reduce your risk of heart disease.

What metals are involved?

A quick look at the San Diego Water Quality Report shows the presence of the following metals: barium, copper, lead, chromium, molybdenum, strontium, uranium, and vanadium. Common heavy metals found in food include: mercury, lead, cadmium, arsenic, manganese, chromium, and aluminum. Air samples have tested positive for lead, cadmium, and arsenic.

What does Chelation therapy involve?

Chelation therapy consists of a series of infusions through an I.V. Each infusion takes an hour. An initial series of 5 treatments done every 1-2 weeks is followed by a maintenance treatment every 3 months. During the infusion other beneficial treatments can be done such as adding vitamins to the mix.

Additional treatments:

Glutathione

Glutathione is a potent antioxidant and quenches dangerous free radicals. It also binds to dangerous toxins through a process called conjugation so that they can be safely eliminated. Absorption of glutathione in oral form is limited. Therefore, IV glutathione is used to ensure effective delivery of the nutrient directly through the bloodstream into the cells.

Modified Myer’s Cocktail /Immune Supportive IV’s

A powerful blend of vitamins and minerals designed for IV use. It was pioneered by Dr. Jon Myers, a Maryland Physician, in 1970s. Although Dr. Myers, the inventor of the cocktail, originally had one formula, that formula has since evolved. Now, doctors will often customize the Myers’ Cocktail according to a patient’s particular needs, adding or deleting nutrients as appropriate.

PPC

PPC is a mixture of essential phospholipids (lecithin and phosphatidylcholine) made from soybeans.

Developed in Europe for atherosclerosis PPC is primarily used to remove the deposits of fatty plaque in arteries and other blood vessels. The most important effect of PPC is its remarkable ability to reduce plaque deposits in the artery wall. PPC therapy increases the heart’s ability to withstand stress and is valuable for individuals who have suffered a heart attack or other heart injury. PPC aids in the removal of cholesterol deposits from cell membranes, arteries, fat cells, muscles, and connective tissue.
This excess cholesterol is then transported to the liver for excretion. PPC also lowers the level of lipoprotein A, a critical factor in the formation of blood clots during heart attacks or stroke. It cleanses the fat from the arteries in the body, and improves circulation to the heart, brain, and other vital organs. In some patients it can also improve cognitive function (memory) and a return of sexual potency.

GPC

GPC is a mixture of essential phospholipids made from (lecithin) soybeans. It is present in all our body cells, and as a nutrient, it has many functions in the body. GPC was originally researched in Europe and is available in IV and capsule form. The most important effects of GPC is its remarkable ability to improve cognitive function, including memory and attention span, in people of various ages. It is also a major treatment in post-stroke patients. It provides a unique form of non-antioxidant protection for our body’s cells. It is a rare water-phase phospholipid which is the building block for the membranes that form and drives all cells.

Furthermore, GPC is a major source of the key nerve and muscle neurotransmitter acetylcholine, and is the body’s main reservoir of the essential nutrient choline, making GPC very important to the nervous system. GPC is well absorbed into the blood stream, and circulates throughout all tissues, and has defined roles in the essential functions of many body systems including the autonomic nervous system, the reproductive system, the endocrine system, the skeletal muscles, and the kidney and liver systems.

Potential Benefits of GPC include:

  • Accelerated recovery of Stroke patients
  • Improved neurological deficits and motor capacity in Stroke patients
  • Improved cognitive function, memory, speech, behavior, and attention in Alzheimer’s, Age-Related dementia, and even in vascular dementia patients. In these patients it can also reduce disorientation, dizziness and fatigue
  • Improved mental performance, word cell and working memory capacity in both young and middle-aged patients
  • Improved male fertility
  • Increased release of growth hormone(GH)
  • Improved liver function & health
